I remember the first time I saw a photo of a mountain with ice bubbles as a foreground trapped in a frozen lake. It really caught my attention. It was at that very same instant that I knew that I wanted to see and photograph this amazing occurrence.
I’ve been fortunate to go a few times already.
Each year is different in presence and nature’s cooperation in the appearance and stability of this phenomenon, but to me, it’s always exciting, always beautiful, and always like a treasure hunt. The bubbles come in various forms and appear at various shapes inside the frozen waters; sometimes there are many and sometimes few. If it’s too warm, the water may melt on the lake’s surface and then might refreeze creating a deeper layer to see the bubbles at, and sometimes snow may fall on top of the lake, prohibiting the exploration until it blows away.
This particular day had a temperature of about -20° and a pretty strong windchill as well. In spite of this, it was a pleasure to be there and to search out various forms in this beautiful area. Photo © copyright by Joyce Bealer.
